Public Domain Spotlight: Public.Resource.Org

pd image by Rebecca Hargrave Malamud

Public.Resource.Org is a non-profit created by Carl Malamud. Their motto is “Making Government Information More Accessible”. They are accomplishing this by digitizing all the public domain material available from every U.S. state and sharing them on the Public.Resource.Org website.

To find out more about Carl’s motivation for Public.Resource.Org read this great article from Wired.

I also had some correspondence with Carl which you can see below. He was very helpful!

Hello Carl,

I’m currently in the process of compiling a list of notable works
dedicated to the public domain. The beginnings of it can be viewed
here…

http://setfree.wik.is/

I came across Public.Resource.Org while researching the topic. I know
the works that the project scans are part of the public domain, but is
Public.Resource.Org itself dedicated to the public domain as well? I
couldn’t find a reference indicating what license the project uses.

Also, if you know off the top of your head any other notable projects
dedicated to the public domain, I’d love to hear about it, so I could
add them to the list.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Jorel

Hi Carl,

Do you happen to know who created the image of “The Great Seal of
Approval”, and also if they have a website or email I can link to?

Here’s the image:

All of our design work, including the seal, are done by Point.B Studio, which is run by Rebecca Hargrave Malamud. Point.B also does the design for watchdog.net and openlibrary.net (among many others!). Here is a link … http://www.webchick.org/

Well that pretty well clears that up.
    Thanks for the update.

You may also want to look into the Web Archive. They have a lot of content form the public domain and stuff form the Library of Congress. Some content are still copyrighted, but those are clearely labled.
